Jo Jo has it all, Hollywood stardom, movie roles, platinum records. Review by dankwit 1. The result can be funny very often but is so much more often painful and dramatic, from Little Jo Jo's upbringing for part of his life in an Ohio Brothel, to his early twenties living with an angry father, a wife and a step-mother, to a young Jo Jo struggling as a beginning comic in Cleveland to his slow, but steady rise to the top, to his eventual full circle to the ICU. We track him restlessly around his luxurious Hollywood home as he calls a drug dealer and sets up a party, all the time claiming that he's off drugs. Maybe Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling isn't perfect, but it's very good and it's my favorite film of its kind. Pryor convincingly looks and acts the way he would have in the same timeframe of his own life. The Ballad of Little Jo is a 1993 American Western film inspired by the true story of a society woman who tries to escape the stigma of bearing a child out of wedlock by going out to the West, and living disguised as a man.The film stars Suzy Amis, Bo Hopkins, Ian McKellen, David Chung, Heather Graham, Carrie Snodgress and Melissa Leo, and was written and directed by Maggie Greenwald. It remains Pryor's show, however, and he is more than up to the challenge of holding the cast together and showing Dancer stripped down to his barest emotions and built up to his best masks. Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling begins with a chapter from Pryor's own real life, his attempts to kick drugs and pain resulting in third-degree burns over half his body and a rush to the hospital. To be fair, it may have been Pryor's intention to simply be a retrospective of the most significant parts of Jo Jo's life and perhaps Pryor wanted us to feel the retrospective confusion that Dancer feels on the ICU table as Alter Ego shuffles his memories. In this movie there is none of that. As he lies unconscious in a hospital, his spiritual alter ego gets up and begins a journey of his own. Sure everyone knows that Pryor is a funny man, but here he shows what a brilliant dramatic actor he really is. In fact, in many ways this is an improvement. In intensive care at a hospital burn unit, Jo-Jo revisits moments in his life, trying to figure out where it all went wrong. SCREEN: 'JO JO DANCER' Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling Directed by Richard Pryor Biography, Comedy, Drama R 1h 37m. Far be it from me to suggest that this film needed such improvement as it's not too hard to catch up (most of the time), but the audience might miss a few key points while playing catch up. At first it seems that Alter Ego is the film’s comedy relief, but his true purpose is revealed when Jo Jo Dancersolves its opening scene’s mystery of how its protagonist wound up in that hospital. Unfortunately, much of the time this is shown in swatches during musical interludes. With its fractured narrative, complete with gimmicky spectral figure guiding us through the proceedings, Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling is Richard Pryor’s All That Jazz. One is never allowed to forget that this big rich superstar comedian is still in so many way little Jo Jo who just wants to be loved and accepted, and most of all, understood. Alter Ego, who not only talks to Jo Jo as he walks through his memories but also offers Jo Jo the opportunity to talk to the people who populate them, tries to talk Jo Jo off of drugs and out of his current situation. Pryor plays not only the lead but the aforementioned spectral figure, whom the credits refer to as “Alter Ego.” The Alter Ego serves the same purpose as Jessica Lange’s Angel of Death in Jazz, that is, to walk the victim back through events in his life that led him to his near-death state, but Alter Ego is more concerned with trying to convince Jo Jo Dancer that his fucked up life is salvageable. At times Dancer finds himself in an impossible predicament but by the next scene is happy as a calm clam without any real resolution to the prior strife (no pun intended). The film is Richard Pryor’s All That Jazz. Pryor deserves the credit for a great movie. Assisted by his DP John A. Alonzo, Pryor shoots a coke-fueled party with frenetic energy, visually propelling the narrative forward with minimal dialogue. Título original: Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling. Perhaps the jokes themselves seemed inconsequential to the plot and could have ended up on the cutting room floor easier than a scene of relationship pain, but the comedy itself IS vital to the plot and should have gotten a better representation than it did. But it is far more ambitious than one would expect from Pryor, who made this his narrative feature film debut. Sinopsis: De tintes autobiográficos, Richard Pryor interpreta a Jo Jo Dancer, un popular cómico con problemas con las drogas. Pryor does show Dancer's evolution as a comedian from bumbling and nervous newcomer who captures the crowd finally with physical comedy, to a self-assured climbing comic, to an experimental "dirty" comic, to a seasoned veteran (commonly gaged by the size of his afro). He throws bottles and paraphernalia into the fireplace, screams to himself that he's gotta stop, and then decides to do cocaine one last time. The drama is cut with moments of comedy that aren't necessarily the moments of comedy one might expect from Pryor. Pryor’s daughter’s revelation that his freebasing accident was actually a suicide attempt only adds to the psychological horror of the sequence.
